About WattSilo

WattSilo started in a garage in Bend, Oregon, during a winter windstorm that knocked out power to half the county for three days. I'm Marcus Reyes, and at the time I was running a small electronics repair shop and had exactly one battery-powered lantern to my name. That week I borrowed a neighbor's portable power station to keep a mini-fridge of insulin running for my father-in-law, and I remember thinking: why doesn't anyone explain these things in plain language? The spec sheets were dense, the marketing was breathless, and the actual answer to "which one should I buy" was buried under jargon about watt-hours, pure sine waves, and battery chemistry most people had never heard of. Who We Are

We're a small team of five: two electrical engineers, a former outdoor gear buyer, a data analyst who used to work in energy auditing, and me, handling writing and testing coordination. Between us we've spent over a decade working with batteries, inverters, and off-grid systems in contexts ranging from residential solar installs to emergency response logistics. None of us came from traditional tech journalism — we came from the field, which is exactly why we started this. We test power stations the way we'd want a friend to test them before we spent our own money.

Why We Built This

Portable power stations exploded in popularity over the last few years, and with that growth came a flood of near-identical looking products, inflated capacity claims, and affiliate-driven "reviews" that were clearly written without anyone touching the product. We built WattSilo to be the opposite of that: a resource where every review reflects real bench testing, real outdoor use, and honest trade-offs. If a unit runs hot under sustained load, we say so. If a manufacturer's advertised capacity doesn't match what we measure, we report the actual number.

How We Review and Pick Products

Every power station featured on WattSilo goes through the same testing process before it earns a spot in our recommendations:

  • Capacity verification: We discharge each unit under controlled loads and measure actual usable watt-hours against the manufacturer's claim, typically finding a 5–15% variance that we disclose in every review.
  • Real-world runtime testing: We run common appliances — mini-fridges, CPAP machines, laptops, space heaters, power tools — to time how long each station lasts under everyday conditions, not just theoretical calculations.
  • Recharge speed testing: We time AC wall recharging, car charging, and solar recharging (using a standardized 200W panel setup) so buyers know what to expect in an actual outage or camping trip.
  • Noise and heat monitoring: Fan noise and unit temperature are logged during high-draw sessions, since these details rarely appear on spec sheets but matter a great deal indoors.
  • Portability and build assessment: We weigh, measure, and physically handle every unit — carrying handles, port placement, display readability, and drop resistance where safe to test.
  • Price-to-capacity analysis: We calculate cost per watt-hour across categories so budget shoppers and premium buyers alike can see where the real value sits.

We purchase the majority of units we review at full retail price using our own budget. When a manufacturer provides a unit for testing, we disclose this clearly at the top of the review, and it never affects our conclusions — we've sent negative reviews back to brands that expected otherwise, and we'll keep doing that.

What Makes WattSilo Trustworthy

We don't accept payment for placement in our "best of" lists. Our comparison tables are generated from our own testing spreadsheet, not copied from manufacturer marketing pages. When we use affiliate links, they are clearly marked, and they never influence which product ranks higher — our internal rankings are locked before any affiliate relationship is considered. We also update reviews when firmware changes, price drops, or new competitor models shift the value equation, rather than letting old content sit stale and misleading.

We're not trying to be the biggest power station site on the internet. We're trying to be the one you trust enough to recommend to your own family when the lights go out.
